119. Handwerkwinkels in Parijs / Needlework Shops In Paris

Vorig jaar heb ik enkele maanden in Parijs gewoond. In berichtje 32 gaf ik al enkele namen van quiltwinkels in Parijs die ik toen bezocht heb. Er zijn echter ook winkels waar fantastische borduurtjes worden verkocht. Mijn favoriet was Des Fils et une Aiguille, in de Rue Chabanais vlakbij L’Opéra Garnier (link). Een andere prachtige winkel is Le Bonheur des Dames, met twee vestigingen: eentje bij de Bastille en de andere in Passage Verdeau, in de buurt van Galeries Lafayette (link). Al deze winkels verkopen ook patchworkstoffen, dus het lukte niet (mij tenminste niet) om met lege handen naar buiten te gaan…

Last year I lived in Paris for several months. In post 32 I already mentioned some patchwork shops in Paris which I visited. There are also some shops where beautiful embroidery patterns are sold. My favorite was Des Fils et une Aiguille, in the Rue Chabanais near L’Opéra Garnier (link). Another favorite is Le Bonheur des Dames with two shops: one near Le Bastille and the other in Passage Verdeau near the Galeries Lafayette (link). All these shops also sell patchwork fabrics, so it’s impossible to walk out empty handed… 

118. Vaderdag / Father’s Day

Deze quilt heb ik speciaal voor mijn vader gemaakt voor zijn 78e verjaardag. Er zijn voornamelijk dierenplaatjes in verwerkt omdat hij erg veel van de natuur hield. De meeste stof is van lekker warm flanel. Hij heeft er van kunnen genieten tot hij op 83-jarige leeftijd overleed. Ik heb deze quilt aangemeld voor de wekelijkse wedstrijd bij de Quilting Gallery (link). Vrijdag, zaterdag en zondag kun je daar alle quilts bewonderen die voor het thema Vaderdag zijn aangemeld.

I made this quilt especially for my father’s 78^th birthday. I mainly used pictures of animals because he truly loved nature. Most fabrics are cosy warm flannels. He enjoyed it till he passed away when he was 83 years old. I have entered this quilt for the Quilting Gallery weekly contest (link). 117. Textiel in Indonesië / Textile In Indonesia

Berthi heeft op haar weblog (link) twee verhaaltjes van mij geplaatst over textiel inclusief batik in Indonesië. Ik geniet al jaren van haar informatieve weblog en vond het erg leuk er een bijdrage aan te kunnen leveren.

Berthi published two of my stories about textile including batik in Indonesia on her weblog (link). For years I’ve been enjoying her informative weblog (it’s only in Dutch I’m afraid), and it was great to make a contribution. 

116. Hollandse sitsen / Dutch Fabrics

Jaren geleden kreeg ik voor m’n verjaardag een grote doos met prachtige sitsen van Den Haan & Wagenmakers. Heel lang heb ik er alleen maar van genoten, totdat ik vond dat er ook wat mee gedaan moest worden. En deze quilt heb ik ervan gemaakt met een eenvoudig tatami-patroon. Omdat ik zelf zo vrolijk werd van deze lapjes, heb ik de quilt als droomdekentje aan de Stichting De Regenboogboom gegeven, die het weer aan een ernstig ziek kind gegeven heeft. Ik hoop van harte dat het kind er soms ook vrolijk van geworden is!

Years ago I received a box full of beautiful fabrics designed by Den Haan & Wagenmakers. For a long time I just cherished them, until I used the fabrics for this quilt in a simple tatami-pattern. And because the fabrics made me very cheerful, I donated this quilt as a so-called ‘blanket to dream under’ to the ‘Stichting Regenboogboom’, an organization that passes on quilts to very ill children. I certainly hope that this quilt made the child who received it cheerfull once in a while…

115. Museum in Oostenrijk / Museum in Austria

Het Volkenkundig Museum (Museum für Volkskultur) bevindt zich in het prachtige kasteel Porcia in de Oostenrijkse plaats Spittal am Drau. Veel oude werktuigen en huisgerei zijn er te zien, maar ook een paar vitrines met oud handwerk, zoals deze breirollen en de merklappen. Erg leuk om te merken dat niet alleen mijn oma al in 1905 zo’n breirol maakte, maar dat ook jonge meisjes in andere landen een proeve van bekwaamheid op breigebied moesten afleggen. 

In the Austrian city of Spittal am Drau one can find the Folk Culture Museum in the beautiful Porcia Castle. Many old tools and household things are on display but they also have some windows with old needlework, like these knitting and embroidery pieces. It was great to notice that not only my grandmother did this kind of knitting exam in 1905, but that also young girls in other countries had to knit something similar as a final test.

114. Amish quilt / Amish Quilt

Ik heb in dit Amishquiltje geprobeerd met kleuren een koude en een warme kant te maken, en daarbij nog vanuit het midden van klein naar groot te gaan en van licht naar donker. Op de foto zie je helaas niet dat de middenblokjes bestaan uit lichtrose en lichtblauw/lichtgroen; in werkelijkheid zijn de kleuren veel helderder. Ik heb het quiltje met de machine gequilt.

In this Amishquilt I’ve used colors to create a warm and a cold side. I also wanted to start in the middle with patches going from small to bigger and from light to dark. Unfortunelately the picture doesn’t show that the middle blocks are made of light pink and light blue/green; in reality the colors are much brighter. I’ve quilted this one by machine. 

113. Vrolijke dag / Brightful Day

Als het een dag regent en je kijkt naar simpele dingen als klosjes garen, of een pot met bandjes, dan wordt het vanzelf een vrolijke dag!

When the rain is pouring and you look at simple things like bobbins of thread, or a pot filled with ribbons, than your day brightens up immediately!

112. Ananas quilt / Pineapple Quilt

Tijdens een workshop in Haarlem leerde ik de techniek van het pineapple patroon kennen. En dan niet het basispatroon, maar met een variatie. Hoewel de 16 blokken van dit paperpiecing patroon veel concentratie vroegen, was het erg leuk om te doen. Met de gele stof kwam ik niet helemaal uit, maar met een vergelijkbaar geel heb ik ‘m toch afgemaakt. Hij is zowel machinaal genaaid als gequilt.

At a workshop in Haarlem I learned the technique of the pineapple pattern with a variation. Although the 16 blocks of this paperpiecing pattern needed a lot of concentration, it was great fun to make it. I ran short of the yellow fabric, but finished it with a similar color. The quilt is patched and quilted by machine. 

111. Borduurmuseum / Embroidery Museum

In Barneveld staat het Borduurmuseum: het enige museum in Nederland dat totaal gewijd is aan borduurkunst in de breedste zin des woords. Er zijn themakamers vol merklappen, schellekoorden, kinderspelen, tegeltjes, en landschappen te vinden. Het museum heeft 12.000 stuks borduurwerk, waarvan 10% tentoongesteld is. De tentoongestelde werken worden regelmatig gewisseld. Ik was verrast door het enthousiasme van de vrijwilligers van het museum. Het is de moeite waard er heen te gaan! In the Dutch city of Barneveld you can find the Embroidery Museum: the only museum in my country that is totally dedicated to embroidered art. One can find rooms full of different themes. The museum has a collection of some 12.000 pieces, of which 10% is displayed. The shown pieces are replaced regularly. I was surprised by the enthousiasm of the volunteers who worked in the museum. 110. Tegelquilt / Tile quilt

Onlangs was ik in het Tegelmuseum in Otterlo om de tentoonstelling Tegelquilts te bekijken (link). Een aanrader en de tentoonstelling is verlengd tot 1 juli. Op de tentoonstelling hingen enkele quilts met het tumbling blocks-patroon. Voor een van m’n eerste quilts heb ik dit tegelpatroon gebruikt op de Engelse paper piecing manier. Het was indertijd de tweede keer dat ik patchwork stof kocht, en de kleurcombinatie behoort nog steeds tot m’n favorieten.

Recently I visited the Tile Museum at Otterlo to watch the exhibition of Tile Quilts (link). I can really recommend this exhibition; it will last until 1 July. On this exhibition I saw some quilts made of the tumbling blocks pattern. I used this pattern for one of my first quilts, made with the English paper piecing method. It was the second time I actually bought patchwork fabric and the color combination is still one of my favorites.

109. Naaimachine / Sewing Machine

Is het geen schatje, dit naaimachine doosje van Jim Shore? Ik kreeg ‘t van m’n man voordat hij 2 weken afreisde naar Afghanistan. Inmiddels is hij gelukkig weer veilig thuisgekomen.

Isn’t it cute, this sewing machine box by Jim Shore? My husband gave it to me before he travelled to Afghanistan for 2 weeks. Meanwhile I’m happy he returned safely back home. 

108. Vierkantjes / Squares

Behalve op hexagons ben ik ook gek op vierkantjes. Deze quilt is gemaakt van 1060 verschillende vierkantjes in het middenstuk, plus nog 138 in de rand, dus een totaal van 1198 verschillende. Een charmquilt dus, hoewel ik niet bewust gekozen heb voor 1 dubbel vierkantje (er kan er wel een per ongeluk in gekomen zijn…). Ik heb vierkantjes stof geruild met quiltvriendinnen om tot dit aantal te komen.

I love squares as much as hexagons. This quilt was made of 1060 different squares in the middle part, and 138 more in the border, which makes it total of 1198 different ones. Therefor it is a real charm quilt, allthough I didn’t put a double fabric in it (there might be one double by accident though…). I exchanged fabric squares with quilt friends to reach this total number. 

107. Pasar Malam / Indonesian Market

Deze week wordt de jaarlijkse Pasar Malam (nu TongTong Fair geheten) weer in Den Haag gehouden. Jaren geleden kocht ik daar een grote tweezijdige quilt gemaakt van allemaal driehoekjes batik, kleintjes aan de ene kant, en wat grotere aan de andere kant. De quilt was niet gevoerd en ook niet gequilt. Toen ik ‘m thuis beter bekeek, bleek er aan een kant ook viscose stof gebruikt te zijn en dat begon al snel te rafelen. Ik heb die kant helemaal uit elkaar gehaald, de viscose lapjes weggegooid, en het is de bedoeling dat ik ‘m weer helemaal in elkaar zet, aangevuld met batik katoen uit m’n eigen voorraad. Maar zover is het nog niet…

This week the annual Indonesian Market is held in The Hague. Years ago I bought there a large double sided quilt made of triangles of batik; small ones on one side and bigger ones on the other side. The quilt had no batting and was not quilted. When I took a better look at home, I noticed that on one side viscose fabric was used which started to fray soon. I took this whole side apart, threw away the viscose, and it’s my intention to put it all together again, supplemented by my own batik fabric stash. But not yet …

106. Huwelijksjubileum / Wedding anniversary

Op 21 mei 1952 (vandaag precies 60 jaar geleden) traden mijn ouders in het huwelijk. Door de huizenschaarste na de 2e W.O. hadden ze lang op een eigen woning (een boerderij) moeten wachten. Mijn moeder heeft haar eigen trouwkleding gemaakt: een satijnen rok met onderrok, een prachtige blouse van crepe en een lange sluier. In liefdevolle herinnering!

On 21 May 1952 (today exactly 60 years ago) my parents got married. Because of the scarcity of houses after the 2^nd World War they had to wait a long time before they got their own house (a farm). My mother had made her own wedding clothes. In loving memory!

105. Jongensquilt / Quilt For Boys

Liefde voor tractoren zit nu eenmaal in onze familie… Jaren geleden kwam m’n neefje met een lapje vol tractoren bij me: wil je daarvan een quiltje voor me maken? Dat wilde ik wel, en het quiltje heeft jarenlang op zijn kamer gehangen. In deze periode is m’n neef(je) druk bezig met z’n eindexamen: succes Thijs!!!

Love for tractors runs in our family… Years ago my little nephew came to me with a tractor-fabric: would you like to make me a quilt? Of course I made him one, and it decorated his room for many years. At this moment he’s working hard on his final highschool exams: good luck Thijs!!!

104. Jong geleerd… / Learned young…

Hier zijn de beide kleindochters druk bezig: de jongste (3 jaar) ontdoet het spoeltje van draad, en de oudste (8 jaar) helpt oma met heel fijn borduurwerk. Ik stimuleer beide, want de liefde voor handwerken heeft een generatie overgeslagen!

My two granddaughters are very busy: the youngst (3 years old) is unwinding the bobbin, and the eldest (8 years old) is helping her grandmother with very tiny cross stitching. I stimulate both of them, since the love for handicraft has skipped a generation!

103. Negenhonderd kleurtjes... / 900 Colors…

... en nog een paar zitten in deze quilt. De top is met de hand gemaakt met het kleinste maatje hexagon van 1 cm. Ik begon er mee toen ik restjes stof van quiltvriendinnen meenam om nog iets mee te doen. Hexagonnetjes waren gemakkelijk mee te nemen op reis en gedurende anderhalf jaar ben ik er mee bezig geweest. In berichtjes 6 en 39 had ik er al iets van laten zien. Daarna thuis de rand erom heen gezet en het geheel doorgequilt; in de hexagons met de hand in sommige naadjes en de rand is machinaal gequilt. Ik vind de quilt erg vrolijk en het was erg leuk er mee bezig te zijn. Hij hangt nu boven m’n werktafel.

... and a few more are in this quilt. The top is made by hand using the smallest size hexagon (1/4” / 1 cm). I started with some fabric left over by my quilt friends which I thought were a waste to throw away. Hexagons are easy to carry along my travels and it took me a year and a half to work on it. In posts 6 and 39 I showed part of it. After that, back at home, I put on a border and quilted the whole thing: in the hexagons in the ditch by hand and the border by machine. I think this quilt is very cheerfull and it was great fun working on it. Now it hangs on the wall next to my working table.

102. Olifantenborduurtje / Elephant Embroidery

Dit borduurtje heb ik jaren geleden gemaakt aan de hand van een patroon uit Libelle of Margriet. Ik vond het erg kleurig en aangezien ons gezin olifantjes in allerlei vorm spaart, was de beslissing om deze te borduren gauw gemaakt. Om het borduurtje heb ik een rand van donkerblauwe zijde gemaakt, en mijn man heeft het goudkleurige lijstje gemaakt.

This cross stitch was made years ago using a pattern from a ladies’ magazine. I like the colors a lot and since our family has been collecting elephants in whatever form, the decision to make this cross stitch was quickly made. I added a border of darkblue silk fabric, and my husband made the “golden” frame.

Quilting Gallery Contest
Zoals meer quilt-bloggers, ben ik lid van de Amerikaanse blogsite: quiltinggallery.com. Daar wordt elke week een wedstrijdje met een bepaald thema gehouden. Door de week kun je foto's van quilts insturen en in het weekend kan dan gestemd worden. En nu, dit weekend, was het thema: Quilts for mothersday. En ja, daar had ik een hele geschikte voor dus die heb ik aangemeld. Hierbij nog een foto ervan, en het hele verhaal kun je hier lezen. Niet met het idee om te winnen want dan had ik veel meer op de tamtam getrommeld, maar om wereldwijd inspiratie te geven én om eens te kijken hoe dat allemaal werkt. 101. Vierkantjes quilt / Triangle Free Quilt

Uit het boek Triangle-Free Quilts van Judy Hopkins komt het patroon van dit quiltje. Ik heb ‘m gemaakt met stoffen van Den Haan & Wagenmakers aangevuld met ecru stoffen. Het is machinaal gemaakt, ook het quiltwerk dat ik deed met nylon garen.

The pattern for this quilt is from the book “Triangle-Free Quilts” by Judy Hopkins. I’ve made it with the Dutch range of fabrics by Den Haan & Wagenmakers, supplemented with ecru fabrics. It’s made on the machine, including the quiltwork which I did with nylon thread. 

100. Hartjes / Heart Collection

Mijn zusje heeft een leuke verzameling hartjes. En natuurlijk heb ik er ook eentje voor haar gemaakt!

My sister has a nice heart collection. And of course I also made her one!

99. ’n Hollands quiltje / A Dutch Quilt

Een typische Hollands quiltje, zo met de Delfts blauwe afbeeldingen. Het rode randje geeft een extra accent aan het blauw. Het hangt in het huis van m’n tante in de VS.

A typical Dutch quilt, with these Delft Blue pictures. The small red border emphasizes the blue. It’s hanging in my aunt’s house in the US.

98. Kleine tasjes uit Azerbeidzjan / Little Bags From Azerbaijan

In de souvenirwinkels van Baku, de hoofdstad van Azerbeidzjan, kun je schattige kleine tasjes kopen. Ze zijn in mooie kleuren geborduurd en rijkelijk versierd. Van oorsprong werden deze tasjes met de hand geborduurd, maar tegenwoordig gebeurt het machinaal.

In the souvenir shops of Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, you can buy beautiful little bags. They are embroidered in nice colors and embellished with beads. Originally these little bags were made by hand, but these days it’s done by machine. 

97. Quilt met knopen, kant, kralen en klosjes / Quilt With Buttons, Lace, Beads, and Bobbins

Dit quiltje is grotendeels gemaakt met stoffen die ik overhad van de quilt die ik in berichtje 50 (link) liet zien, alleen nu op een heel andere manier verwerkt. De stoffen zijn bedekt met knopen (in het vak linksonder en in het gekleurde vak in het midden, maar helaas niet goed te zien op de foto), kant, kralen en klosjes.

This quilt is mainly made of fabrics left over from the quilt I showed in post 50 (link) but arranged in a totally different way. The fabrics are covered with real buttons (left below and in the colored fabric in the middle, but it doesn’t show well on the picture), lace, beads and bobbins.

  

96. 1 Mei viering / 1st May Celebration

Op veel plaatsen in (Zuid) Nederland en andere landen wordt op 1 mei een meiboom opgericht. Het is een vruchtbaarheidsrite die aan het begin van de zomer plaats vindt en men verwacht daarmee  goede opbrengsten te behalen voor vee en akkers. Deze foto’s zijn in Beieren gemaakt waar kinderen in mooie traditionele kleding gingen dansen rond de meiboom.

In many places in (South of) the Netherlands and others countries the traditional 1^st May tree is planted. It is a fertility rite that takes place at the beginning of summer and people expect to have a high production for their cattle and fields. These pictures are taken in Bayern (Germany) where children in traditional costumes were preparing to dance around the tree.
