35. Schotse ruiten / Scottish Tartans
Tijdens een reis door het
oosten van Canada kwamen we in het kleine havenstadje Pictou / Nova Scotia
terecht bij de Hector Heritage Quay. Hier wordt de geschiedenis verteld van de
eerste 200 Schotse pioniers die in 1773 in Pictou arriveerden. Er lag een
prachtig gereconstrueerde kopie van het schip Hector waarop de moeizame reis
werd gemaakt en in het museum werd de geschiedenis van de reis en de moeilijke
omstandigheden van de eerste jaren verteld. Ook hingen in het museum de geruite
stoffen (tartans) van de verschillende Schotse families die toen en in latere
jaren in Nova Scotia arriveerden.

the Hector Heritage Quay in the small harbour town of Pictou / Nova Scotia.
Here the story is told of the first 200 Highland Scots that came to Nova Scotia
in 1773. There is a beautifully reconstructed copy of the ship Hector on which
the troublesome journey was made, and in the museum the history of the journey
and the first years of settling are related. In the museum you could also find
the different tartans of some of the Scottish families who at that time, and later
on arrived at Nova Scotia.
