165. Nostalgie / Old Days

Ach, daar kwam ik onlangs m’n aller, allereerste borduurtjes weer tegen. Echt nog lagere schoolwerk: een hoesje om een Buismanblikje (bestaan die nog?) om je pennen en potloden in te zetten, en een hoesje voor m’n blokfluit…

Ah, recently I found my very first needleworks again. I’ve made them in elementary school, something to put pens in and a cover for my flute… 

164. Weer beginnen / Starting Up

September was voor mij een vakantiemaand. Omdat we al veel op reis zijn, gingen we dit keer niet lang en ver weg, maar steeds een paar dagen op pad, voornamelijk in eigen land. Het weer werkte volop mee, en we hebben veel plekken bezocht die we nog niet kenden. Maar nu moet ik weer beginnen met de dingen waar ik al mee bezig was, en dat terwijl m’n hoofd vol zit met nieuwe inspiratie… Ik ben bezig een quilt met Spakenburgse stoffen met de hand te quilten, de lapjes van de Indonesische quilt zijn allemaal gestreken, bijgesneden en worden opnieuw aan elkaar gezet, en m’n voorraad blokken uit 501 Quiltblokken vordert gestaag. Ik heb mezelf streng toegesproken: eerst iets af en dan pas weer iets nieuws… Of ik het volhoud???

September was my holiday month. Because we already travel a lot, we decided to make short trips in our own country. The weather turned out great, and we visited many places we hadn’t been before. But now I have to start up with things I was already working on, even when my head is full with new inspiration… I’m handquilting a quilt made of fabrics of national costumes, the patches of the Indonesian quilt are all ironed, cut again and put together again, and the pile of little blocks from “501 Quilt Blocks” is growing steadily. I told myself not to start anything new before I had finished something… I’m not sure if I can keep up with that… 

163. Kerst / Christmas

Hoewel de herfst nog maar amper begonnen is, komt de kerst ook al weer in zicht. Een paar jaar geleden was ik erg in de ban van poppenhuizen, maar ik had geen ruimte voor een echt poppenhuis. Dan maar iets kleiners, en zo kwam deze miniatuurkamer tot stand. Een echte kerstsfeer, inclusief verlichting. Ik maakte twee superkleine quiltjes en de doos met kerstballen. Een vriendin maakte het gebreide kerstmannetje (in ruil voor een quiltje), iemand anders maakte de kerstboom en weer een ander het boekenplankje en de boeken plus de tas met een fles champagne. Het kerststalletje kocht ik in Lourdes toen we daar tijdens een vakantie langskwamen. Kortom, een geweldig gezamenlijk project, helemaal in de kerstsfeer!

Although autumn just started is Christmas not far away. A few years ago I loved doll houses, but I didn’t have space for a real one. Something smaller would have to do, so I made this miniature room. It’s Christmas all over, including lighting. I made two very small quilts and a box for the christmas decoration. A friend knitted Santa Claus (for which I gave her a little quilt), somebody else made the tree, and another did the bookshelf and the books, as well as the bag with the bottle of champaign. The nativity set was bought in Lourdes (France) when we were there on holiday. In short, a great combined project, in the proper Christmas mood!

162. Paarse tatami quilt / Purple Tatami Quilt

Uit het boek Successful Quilts van Judy Turner en Margaret Rolfe haalde ik het idee om een quilt te maken van één malletje: een rechthoek. Twee naast elkaar en zes er om heen, en dat heet dan een tatami, genoemd naar een Japans vloerkleed. En dan heel veel restjes gebruiken, in mijn geval in paars en turkoois. Meestal maak ik vrij rustige quilts, maar zo’n bonte was ook erg leuk om te maken.

From the book Successful Quilts by Judy Turner and Margaret Rolfe I got the inspiration to make a quilt using only one template: a rectangle. Two next to each other and six around them, named tatami after a Japanse carpet. And then a lot of scraps, in my case purple and turquoise. 

161. Kringloopwinkels / Secondhand Shops

Als we door Nederland rijden, kan ik het niet nalaten een kringloopwinkel binnen te gaan als we er eentje tegenkomen. Ik ben niet speciaal naar iets op zoek, maar kom toch altijd met iets leuks/grappigs/bruikbaars/leesbaars naar buiten. Op de foto zie je wat ik zo de afgelopen tijd verzameld heb: een merklap uit 1980 (wordt vanzelf antiek als je ‘m maar lang genoeg bewaard), breed kantklos-band, een breiboekje uit 1885 (volgens mij een replica, maar goed…), wol en mohair garen voor poppenkleertjes, een oude theedoek en daar bovenop een schattig klein naaidoosje. En daarnaast nog stapels oude naai- en handwerktijdschriften.

When my husband and I drive through the Netherlands, we often stop at a secondhand shop. I don’t look for anything specific, but nevertheless, I always step out with something nice/funny/useful/readable etc. On the picture you can see what I’ve collected lately: a sampler cross-stitch made in 1980, bobbin lace, a knitting book from 1885 (not an original…), some wool and mohair thread for knitting dolls clothes, an old kitchen towel, and on top of that a beautiful tiny sewing box. And apart from that several old sewing and needlework magazines. 

160. Ricky Tims quilt

Dit quiltje heb ik gemaakt tijdens een workshop over de techniek van Ricky Tims. Eigenlijk heel simpel om te maken als je eenmaal weet hoe het werkt en het geeft een leuk effect.

This quilt I made at an one-day course on Ricky Tims’ technique. It’s really very simple once you know how to do it, and it gives a nice result.

159. Quiltwinkel / Quilt Shop

Afgelopen week heb ik weer een bezoek kunnen brengen aan de grootste quiltwinkel van Nederland: De Naaidoos in Nieuw Buinen (link). Hoewel het een hele rit is om er te komen, is het altijd een feestje daar rond te lopen en de prachtige stoffen en toebehoren te bekijken. Elk kwartaal is er een nieuwe tentoonstelling, en ik heb in 2008 de eer gehad om daar mijn werk te laten zien. Dit keer is er een tentoonstelling van Rita Dijkstra die nog tot eind november duurt. Zeer de moeite waard!

Last week I was again able to visit the largest Dutch quilt shop: De Naaidoos in Nieuw Buinen (link). It’s always a great pleasure to walk around and enjoy the beautiful fabrics. Every 3 months there is a new exhibition, and in 2008 I had the honour of showing my quilts. At the moment there is an exhibition of quilts made by Rita Dijkstra, which will last till the end of November. Very worthwhile!

YEAH, gewonnen! YEAH, first place!

Met 49% van alle stemmen is de quilt “Country, village, town” overtuigend winnaar geworden van de quiltwedstrijd van afgelopen weekend. Heel veel dank aan iedereen die deze quilt zijn of haar stem heeft gegeven!

With 49% of all votes the quilt “Country, village, town” became the clear winner of last weekend’s quilting contest. Thanks a lot to everyone who voted for this quilt!

158. Quiltwedstrijd / Quilting Contest

Voor de quiltwedstrijd van Quilting Gallery van dit weekend (link) heb ik weer een quilt aangemeld. Ik had ‘m al eerder laten zien in bericht 69 (link), maar laat ‘m hier ook nog weer zien. Ik was geïnspireerd door een boek van Yoko Saito. Behalve Japanse weefstoffen zit er ook Duits linnen in en hij is helemaal met de hand gemaakt, ook het quilten.

For this weekend’s Quilting Gallery Contest (link) I submitted a quilt. I’ve shown it before in post 69 (link), but since that’s a while back I show it here again. My inspiration came from a book by Yoko Saito. The quilt is made with Japanese woven fabrics, but also with German linen. It’s completely made by hand, including the quilting.

157. Tuintafelkleed / Garden Table Cloth

Ik had altijd moeite met het weggooien van mooie plastic zakken. Toen ik een hele stapel verzameld had, heb ik de mooiste eruit gezocht en die met een zigzagsteek aan elkaar genaaid. Het resultaat was een boeiend tafelkleed voor de tuintafel!

I always found it difficult to throw away nice plastic bags. When I had a large collection, I took out the nicest and sewed them together. The result was an interesting tablecloth for the garden table!

156. Herfstkleed / Autumn Quilt

De herfst begint al een beetje z’n intrede te doen. Deze quilt heb ik gemaakt van allerlei herfstachtige stoffen. De bladeren zijn identiek maar in 3 verschillende groottes. Ik heb de quilt laten quilten door The Maple Leaf in Zutphen omdat ik een “swirling” motief van de longarm-machine een verrijking voor de quilt vond.

Autumn is already on its way. This quilt I made from fabric with different kinds of autumn prints. The leaves are identical but in 3 different sizes. I had the quilt finished by Maple Leaf in Zutphen (NL) because I thought a swirling motive from the long-arm machine was an enrichtment for this quilt.

155. Weg in eigen land / Holiday In My Own Country

Heeft niets met stofzaken te maken, het is gewoon genieten. Als het mooi weer is, is ons eigen land zo prachtig!

This has nothing to do with fabric, it’s simply to enjoy. When the weather is good, my country is just beautiful!

154. Poppendekentje / Little Dolls Blanket

Voor een klein meisje dat 3 jaar werd heb ik dit poppendekentje gemaakt. Ze was er erg inventief mee en legde zowel aan het hoofd- als aan het voeteneind een popje…

I made this dolls blanket for the birthday of a 3-year old girl. She was very innovative and put a doll on either side of the blanket…  

153. Kunstmarkt /Art Market (2)

Mede dankzij het mooie weer is het een prachtige dag geweest. We hadden een vrolijke kraam en kregen veel bezoekers. Over 2 jaar hopen we er weer te staan!

It was a great day last Saturday and not only because the weather was beautiful. Our booth looked very cheerful and we had lots of visitors. In 2 years we hope to be there again! 

152. Appels en peren / Apples And Pears

Dit onlangs gereed gekomen quiltje is één van de vele quilts die op de kunstmarkt (zie berichtje 151) te koop zal worden aangeboden. Ik wilde graag iets maken in zwart/wit. Toen ik daarvan een aantal blokken klaar had, vond ik het toch te somber en heb er appels en peren op geappliceerd om het geheel een stuk vrolijker te maken. 

This recently finished quilt is one of many quilts that will be for sale on the Art Market (see post 151). I wanted to make something in black and white, but when I had put some blocks together, I thought it was a bit depressing. The apples and pears made this quilt more cheerful. 

151. Kunstmarkt / Art Market

A.s. weekend is alweer voor de 12e keer het Havenfestival in Almere-Haven (link). Een onderdeel daarvan is de kunstmarkt op zaterdag, waar Janneke en ik sinds 2006 om het andere jaar met een kraam vol quilts en bijbehorende zaken aan meedoen. Elke keer is het erg gezellig en hebben we veel aanloop. Ook nu hebben we weer enorm veel zin om onze kraam in te richten en we hopen heel veel mensen te ontmoeten die geïnteresseerd zijn in patchwork en quilten. Zo zag het er uit!

Already for the 12th year the Harbour Festival will be organised in Almere-Haven (link). Part of this Festival is the art market on Saturday. Every other year Janneke and I have a booth at this market with quilts and other needlework. And every time we meet many people. We are really looking forward to set up our booth on Saturday and we hoop to meet many people who are interested in patchwork and quilting. On the pics an impression!

150. Quilt gemaakt na 1ste workshop / Quilt Made After Attending 1st Course

Op mijn manier had ik geen tijd voor een complete beginnerscursus en ik heb daarom steeds losse workshops gevolgd om verschillende technieken te leren. Mijn eerste workshop was in Haarlem. Daar ik leerde met lineaal en snijmat om te gaan waardoor het mogelijk werd vierkanten en driehoeken te snijden zonder mallen. Een wereld ging voor me open, want zoals ik het daarvoor in elkaar prutste, was het niet veel soeps. Na afloop van de workshop heb ik meteen echte patchworkstofjes gekocht, in zeer gewaagde kleuren. Die stoffen heb ik verwerkt in allerlei blokken waarin volop vierkanten, strips en driehoeken gebruikt konden worden. Alleen uitrekenen hoe ik de rand goed kon krijgen, lukte nog niet…

Since I didn’t have time to follow a starters’ course in patchwork, I have been regularly attending one-day courses to learn different techniques. My first course was in the Dutch city of Haarlem, where I learned to make squares and triangles by using a ruler and a mat. A whole new world opened up, since what I had made before never turned out right. At the end of this course I bought some real quilt fabrics, in very daring colors. I used these fabrics in a kind of sampler using squares, strips and triangles. The only thing I didn’t know at that time, was how to calculate a proper border…  

Quilting Gallery Contest

Velen van jullie hebben dit weekend een bezoek gebracht aan de quiltwedstrijd van de Quilting Gallery. Er waren prachtige scrap-quilts te zien. Degenen die een stem op mijn “Little Tiles” hebben uitgebracht, wil ik graag van harte bedanken. Van de 67 inzendingen ben ik uiteindelijk 4^e geworden met 113 stemmen, iets waar ik erg verguld mee ben. Hartelijk dank!

Many of you paid a visit at the contest of the Quilting Gallery last weekend. Beautiful scrap quilts were shown. Those of you who voted for my “Little Tiles”, I want to thank you very much. Out of the 67 submissions, my quilt turned out as number 4 with a total of 113 votes, which makes me very grateful and happy. Thank you very much!

149. M’n tegelquilt / My Tiles Quilt

In berichtje 103 (link) heb ik een quilt laten zien die gemaakt is met het kleinste maatje hexagons. De inspiratie van dit patroon had ik opgedaan in Indonesië; daar zie je vele stoeptegels in dit patroon. Quiltvriendinnen die bezig waren met een vingerhoedquilt, gaven mij hun restjes. Daar kon ik precies 3 of 4 hexjes uit knippen. Omdat het zo ontzettend leuk was om te doen, ben ik verder gegaan met m’n eigen voorraad. Uiteindelijk zitten er meer dan 900 verschillende kleuren in drievoud in. Ik laat de quilt nog een keer zien, omdat ik ‘m aangemeld heb voor de wedstrijd van de Quilting Gallery dit weekend (link).
In post 103 (link) I showed a quilt which was made with the smallest size hexagons. I found the inspiration in Indonesia; street tiles like these are found all over the place. Some quilt friends who were making a thimble quilt, gave me their leftovers. I could cut 3 or 4 hexagons from that. Because it was so much fun to do, I continued with fabrics from my own stash. At the end I had over 900 different colors in triplicate. I show this quilt again in this post, because I submitted it for this weekend’s contest by the Quilting Gallery (link). 

148. Wasgoed / Laundry

Tijdens een uitstapje in eigen land, zag ik in Marken deze waslijn. In deze tijd van droogtrommels en wasrekken, is het een prachtig gezicht deze kleuren aan een waslijn te zien.

I made a trip in my own country and spotted this clothesline on the island of Marken. In this era of dryers and laundry racks, it’s a beautiful sight to see all these colorful clothes on a clothesline. 

147. Bootjesquilt / Little Boat Quilt

Een echt zomers quiltje, zo met de zeilboot. Het is een klein quiltje van 28 x 35 cm, en helemaal met de hand in de glas-in-lood techniek gemaakt. En daarna met de hand gequilt. Het quiltje heeft ooit op een miniquilttentoonstelling van het Quiltersgilde in Amsterdam-Noord gehangen.

A real little summer quilt, with the sailing boat. It’s a small quilt of 11 x 14” (28 x 35 cm). I made it by hand in the stained glass technique and afterwards it’s also quilted by hand. This quilt was displayed on a miniquilt exhibition once held in Amsterdam, organized by the Dutch Quilt Guild. 

146. Kleine blokjes / Little Blocks (4)

Het maken van de 10 x 10 cm blokjes gaat gestaag door. Leuk werk!

I keep on making the 4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm) blocks. It’s fun to do!

145. Asymmetrische quilt / Non-Symmetrical Quilt

Jullie zullen vast gemerkt hebben dat bijna al mijn quilts symmetrisch zijn. Toch wilde ik daar een keer van afwijken en een asymmetrische quilt maken. Hoewel het helemaal tegen m’n gevoel van rust inging en ook niet erg a-ymmetrisch is geworden, ben ik toch tevreden over het resultaat en wie weet maak ik er nog wel eens eentje…   

I’m sure you have noticed that almost all my quilts are symmetric. But at least once in my quilt-life I wanted to make an non-symmetrical quilt. Although this went completely against my own feelings of comfort and still isn’t very non-symmetric, I am happy with the result and who knows, I might try it again…

144. Floriade / Flower Show

Op de Floriade in Venlo (link) vind je verrassend genoeg ook “stofzaken”. Hoewel de verschillende landenpaviljoens soms erg commercieel aandoen, is het toch leuk goed rond te kijken. Ik vond: kantklossen (Sri Lanka), batik (Indonesië), feestjurken (Afghanistan), een eenvoudige quilt uit Kenia, én een warm ingepakte boom! De Floriade is nog t/m 7 oktober 2012 geopend.

Every 10 years we have an international Flower Show in a different Dutch town. This time it was Venlo (link). In addition to everything concerning flowers and horticulture, one can also find some textile related items. Although various country pavillions are very commercial, it is still fun to look around. This is what I found: bobbin lace making from Sri Lanka, batik making from Indonesia, nicely decorated dresses for special occasions from Afghanistan, a simple quilt from Kenya, and even a warmly dressed-up tree! The Flower Show can be visited till 7 October 2012.

143. Textielpost / Textile Postcards

Op de blog van Berthi staan vandaag twee textielkaarten die ik haar eerder dit jaar stuurde vanuit Macedonië en Kosovo. Je kunt het bijbehorende verhaal hier lezen.
