142. Rood/gele hexagons / Red/Yellow Hexagons

In de zomer is het ook gemakkelijk met hexagons te werken. Thuis snij je lapjes op maat, en ergens buiten doe je de stofjes om de kartonnetjes. Aan elkaar zetten kan ook nog buiten, en het grotere werk komt dan weer binnen als het koeler is. In deze rood/gele quilt zitten allemaal verschillende lapjes; er zijn geen twee dezelfde bij. Deze quilt heeft gehangen tijdens de tentoonstelling van het Quiltersgilde in Deventer een aantal jaren geleden.
In summer hexagons are easy to work with. At home you prepare the patches, and somewhere outside you put them on the carton shapes. Putting them together can still be done outside, and the bigger job can be done inside again when it’s cooler. This red/yellow quilt has only different fabrics; there aren’t two the same. This quilt hung at the exhibition of the Dutch Quilt Guild in Deventer (NL) some years ago.

141. Poppen in de zomer / Dolls In Summertime

Het is niet echt warm in Nederland, dus de poppen houden hun kleren maar aan.

This summer it’s not really warm in the Netherlands, so the dolls keep on their clothes.

140. Blauwe hexagon quilt / Blue Hexagon Quilt

Deze quilt heb ik gemaakt met mijn favoriete methode: hexagons met de hand. Prettig om te doen tijdens een reis, en uiteindelijk thuis aan elkaar gezet. Door de blauwe batik vloeien de kleuren een beetje in elkaar. Dit is één van m’n favorieten!

This quilt was made using my favorite method: handpieced hexagons. A nice things to do while travelling, and finally put together at home. I like the way the blue of the batiks is melting into each other a little. It’s one of my favorites!

139. De volgende 9 blokjes / The Next 9 Blocks (3)

Het is heerlijk om deze blokjes te maken als je een grote stapel vierkanten van 10 x 10 cm voor het grijpen hebt liggen.

It’s a great job to make these little blocks when you have a big pile of 4” x 4” (10x 10 cm) squares for the taking. 

138. Quilts in Spakenburg / Quilts in Spakenburg (NL)

In het Muziekcentrum van Spakenburg wordt momenteel de quilttentoonstelling “Van Ootje’s Goet” gehouden waarin vele quilts van Tiny van Halteren te bezichtigen zijn. Tiny koopt geen stoffen in een winkel, maar maakt quilts van oude kleding (klederdrachten) of stofresten. De patronen van Tiny zijn erg origineel. Ook van andere Spakenburgse dames zijn quilts te zien. Deze tentoonstelling duurt nog t/m 18 augustus. Een echte aanrader. 

Daarnaast zijn er ook nog t/m 8 september quilts te zien in het Klederdracht- en Visserijmuseum in Spakenburg.

In the “Muziekcentrum” of the Dutch town of Spakenburg you can find an exhibiton where a lot of quilts by Tiny van Halteren are shown. Tiny doesn’t buy fabrics in a shop, but makes quilts from old garments (national costumes) or leftovers. The patterns used by Tiny are very original. Other ladies from Spakenburg have also contributed to this exhibition, which lasts till 18 August. A real must if you are visiting my country!

Until 8 September other quilts are also exhibited in the Costume and Fisheries Museum in

Spakenburg.

En als je gaat tijdens de Spakenburgse Dagen (nog op de woensdagen 1 en 8 augustus), dan vind je allerlei kramen waar ook klederdrachtstoffen verkocht worden, zodat je je eigen “klederdrachtquilt” kunt maken.

And if you would pay a visit during the special Summer Market Days (on Wednesdays 1 and 8 August) you will find booths where national costume fabrics are sold; you can make your own typical Dutch quilt!  

137. Bedquilt / Bed Quilt

Dit is een quilt waarvan de grootte is ontstaan doordat ik gewoon niet kon ophouden blokken te maken. Steeds twee vierkanten (een donker en een licht) schuin doorsnijden, opnieuw aan elkaar naaien, nog een keer schuin doorsnijden, aan andere doorgesneden lapjes naaien, en een blok is klaar. Hele fat quarters maar ook veel restjes kon ik er in kwijt. Vorige week toen het zo regende, had ik de gelegenheid ‘m door te stikken, en gisteren met het mooie weer, kon ik ‘m in het nieuw paviljoentje in onze tuin met de hand ombiezen. Weer eentje klaar!

The size of this quilt came into being because I just couldn’t stop making the blocks. Some fat quarters together with a lot of leftovers were used. We had a lot of rain last week which gave me the great opportunity to quilt it on my sewing machine. Yesterday we had lovely weather and while sitting in the new pavillion in our garden, I could sew the border by hand. Another quilt finished!

136. Quiltboek / Quilt Book

Tussen de vele quiltboeken die ik in de kast heb staan, is dit boek één van mijn favorieten. Mede door dit boek is mijn interesse in buitenlandse quilts ontstaan. Uit de hele wereld worden quilts getoond met uitleg en een eenvoudig patroon. Op de foto's de bladzijden met quilts uit Pakistan.

Among the many quilt books in my cupboard, this is one of my favorites (the original English title is: Rags To Rainbows). My interest in quilts from foreign countries also comes from this book. Quilts are shown from the whole world with some background information combined with an easy pattern. I’ll show you the pages with quilts from Pakistan.

135. Huizenborduurtje / Cross Stitch Houses

In 2008 stond op de site “Grilles de Maryse” een “sal damier” van letters met huisjes. Ik heb me hierdoor laten inspireren om een alfabet met quiltmotieven te borduren, die ik eerder liet zien in bericht 7 (link). Nu heb ik ook een borduurtje gemaakt met de huisjes van dat patroon. Het geheel meet 13 x 13 cm en dat was zo pietepeuterig dat ik ‘m gemaakt heb met een extra leesbril als loep. Hij is wel heel vrolijk geworden!

In 2008 I found a nice cross stitch pattern on a French website consisting of the alphabet combined with houses. Earlier I made the alphabet but combined with quilt patterns. I already showed it in post 7 (link). Now I finished a cross stitch with the houses of the original pattern. The whole thing is a little more than 5”x5” (13 x 13 cm) and the stitches were so tiny I had to use extra reading glasses as a magnifying glass. It turned out real cheerful!

134. Quilts uit Pakistan / Quilts From Pakistan

Soms gaat mijn man alleen op zakenreis. Op dit moment is hij in Pakistan en hij stuurde mij foto’s van quilts in een zigeunerkamp. Ik kreeg tranen in m’n ogen toen ik bedacht hoe weinig deze mensen hebben en hoe ze toch zulke vrolijke gebruiksquilts kunnen maken.

Sometimes my husband travels alone on his business trips. At this moment he is in Pakistan and he sent me pictures of a gipsy encampment. I had tears in my eyes when I thought of how poor these people are and still make such bright quilts to use for different purposes.

133. Kleine quiltblokjes / Small Quilt Blocks (2)

In vervolg op berichtje 129: ik heb weer 9 blokjes af! Iemand vroeg of ik alle blokken uit het boek 501 Quiltblokken ga maken, maar nee, dat ben ik zeker niet van plan. Ik gebruik sommige blokken uit het boek, en sommige verzin ik zelf (zoals het blokje met schaduw) en ik ga er mee door zolang ik het leuk vind! 

Follow-up on post 129: I finished 9 more little blocks! Somebody asked if I would make all blocks from the book, but no, I certainly won’t do that. I use some blocks from the book and others I design myself (like the one with the shadow), and I’ll continue as long as I like it! 

Ook de stapel bijgesneden Indonesische lapjes groeit gestaag. Ik heb uitgerekend dat het er in totaal meer dan 1000 zijn. Op de foto zijn de 2 rechterstapeltjes al gesneden, de middelste zijn viscose die straks weggegooid gaan worden, en de 2 linkerstapeltjes moeten nog gestreken en bijgesneden worden. 
Also the pile of neatly cut Indonesian patches is growing. I’ve calculated that there are more than 1000 totally. On the picture the 2 piles on the right have been cut, the middle pile are the viscose ones that will be thrown away, and the 2 piles on the left still need to be ironed and cut neatly.

132. Naaimatje / Sewing Mat

Ik heb een vrij zware naaimachine en om die gemakkelijk weg te kunnen schuiven ipv te tillen, heb ik een naaimatje gemaakt. Ik heb een plastic placemat als mal gebruikt om 2 stoffen uit te knippen. Aan de onderkant zit molton, dat is lekker glad, en bovenop een babyrib. In een hoek heb ik een speldenkussen gemaakt. Biesbandje erom, klaar. Zoals je ziet is m’n matje verkleurd en bijna versleten door het vele heen- en weer geschuif.

My sewing machine is rather heavy and to move it easily out of the way instead of lifting it, I made a sewing mat. I used a plactic placemat to cut out 2 fabrics. On the bottom I put a piece of soft smooth fabric and the top one is a ribcord. In a corner I put a pincushion. As you can see, my mat is almost worn out because it’s used so often.

131. Een gouwe ouwe / An Golden Oldie

Ik heb weer een quilt aangemeld voor de contest van de Quilting Gallery (link). Het onderwerp is dit weekend “Memory” en de quilt die daarvoor in aanmerking kwam, was te zien in één van mijn eerste berichtjes, nr 15. Dat is zo ver weg dat ik ‘m hier nogmaals plaats. 130. Ondergoed / Underwear

Ik heb een prachtige collectie (nooit gedragen) ondergoed van mijn oma Aaltje. Het is allemaal van katoen en met de hand genaaid. Ik vermoed dat het ongeveer 100 jaar oud is, omdat ze zich in 1912 verloofde met Jan, mijn latere opa. Behalve het bewaren en het zo nu en dan even tevoorschijn halen, weet ik eigenlijk niet goed wat ik er mee kan doen. Het is te mooi om er de schaar in te zetten. Heeft iemand nog suggesties?

I have a nice collection of underwear (never worn) of my grandmother Aaltje. It is all coton and handsewed. I think it is approx. 100 years old when, because in 1912 she got engaged with Jan, my grandfather to be. Apart from keeping it, and taking it out of the cupboard once in a while, I’m not sure what to do with it. It’s too beautiful to cut in pieces. Does anybody have a suggestion? 

129. Waar ik mee bezig ben / What I'm Working On (Small Blocks 1)

Op dit moment ben ik met 2 dingen tegelijk bezig: de lapjes uit de Indonesische quilt (berichtje 107) ben ik allemaal (het zijn er honderden) aan het strijken en bijsnijden. Ik vermoed dat de quilt onder armoedige omstandigheden in elkaar is gezet: zonder lineaal, snijmes en goed licht. Omdat het bijsnijden toch wel behoorlijk saai werk is, maak ik daarnaast blokjes uit het boek “501 Quiltpatronen”. Er is zoveel variatie in patroontjes:  gemakkelijk/moeilijk, met de hand of met de machine, dat er voorlopig nog geen eind aan komt. Hier zijn de eerste negen blokjes (elk 10 x 10 cm). Om beurten aan deze 2 dingen te werken is een leuke combinatie!

These days I’m working on 2 things: the pieces (there are hundreds) from the Indonesian quilt (post 107) are being ironed and cut neatly. I think the quilt had been put together under very poor conditions, with no ruler, cutting knife or proper light. But it is also rather boring to do, and I started making blocks from the book “501 Quilt Blocks” (from Better Homes and Gardens Books). There is so much variation in patterns: easy/challenging, by hand or machine, etc. that I can continue for a long time. I’ll show you the first 9 blocks (each one 4” x 4” / 10 x 10 cm). Together it’s a nice combination to work on.

128. Quilt uit India / Quilt From India

Deze quilt uit India heeft mijn man ooit meegenomen, net als de quilt uit berichtje 42. Hij is gemaakt met een papieren vulling (de quilt maakt een knisperend geluid…), en op de naden zijn witte koordjes genaaid. Ik vind ‘m erg grappig!

My husband once brought this quilt from India, just like the quilt in post 42. The quilt is made with a paper batting (it makes a crispy sound…), and white cords are sewed on the ditches. I think it’s cute!

 

127. Zomerquilt / Summer quilt

Van de chocoladequilt had ik 30 stukjes van 3 x 6 cm over. Daar moest natuurlijk wat mee gebeuren, ‘t zou zonde zijn als ze in de grote restjesmand zouden verdwijnen. Met evenveel stukjes witte stof leek het al een vrolijk geheel te worden, maar na een duik in de restjesmand werd het niet alleen groter, maar nog vrolijker! Uiteindelijk ben ik gestopt toen er 290 verschillende stofjes inzaten. Helaas is het niet te zien in de restjesmand…

The chocalate quilt left me with 30 pieces of approx. 1” x 2” (3x6 cm). Of course something had to be done with them, as it would be a shame to put them in the big basket. Using as many pieces of white fabric, it started to turn out to become very cheerful, but after using scraps from the big basket it not only became bigger, but even more cheerful! I finished when I had used 290 different fabrics. Unfortunately it doesn’t show in the big basket…

126. Opruimen / Tidying

Oef, ik heb in totaal 4 grote dozen uit m’n lapjeskast leeggemaakt, alle lapjes gestreken, en daarna heb ik ze weer netjes opgeruimd. Dat netjes betekent: bijsnijden tot rechte stukken. Alles wat te klein was of eraf gesneden was, heb ik in vierkanten van 10x10 cm, of 5x5 cm gesneden en de overgebleven stukjes verdwenen in een grote mand. Op de foto zie je het resultaat van de doos met gele/beige/bruine stoffen en zo is het de rode, de blauwe en de groen/paarse doos ook vergaan. En nu heb ik een heerlijke voorraad voor scrapquilts!

In total I have emptied 4 big boxes of fabrics, ironed every single one, and put them away neatly. And neatly meant: cut into straight pieces. Everything too small or that had been cut of, was cut into squares of 4”x4” (10x10 cm) or 2”x2” (5x5 cm), and the leftovers went into a large basket. On the picture you can see the result of the yellow/beige/brown box and the same happened to the red, the blue and the green/purple box. So now I have a wonderful stash for scrapquilts!

125. Chocolade quilt / Chocolate Quilt

Deze quilt heb ik afgelopen winter gemaakt van 2 basisstoffen en een heleboel kleurige stofjes. De bruine stof met “smarties” doet me erg denken aan de kleuren van m’n slaapkamer in de 70er-jaren. Een heimweequilt!

Last winter I made this quilt of 2 larger pieces of fabrics combined with a lot of colorful small ones. The brown fabric with "smarties" reminds me of the colors in my bedroom in the seventies. A real nostalgic quilt! 

124. Brei- of haakwerk van gaas / Netting Knitted or Crocheted

In het museum voor moderne kunst Centre Pompidou in Parijs hangt dit kunstwerk. Het ziet eruit alsof het gaas gebreid of gehaakt is. Het ijzer is prachtig glad verwerkt; hoe zou de artiest dat gedaan hebben?

In the museum for modern art Centre Pompidou in Paris you can find this piece of art. It looks like the netting has been knitted or crocheted. The iron is beautifully smooth and I wonder how the artist made this?  

123. Bedsprei / Bed cover

Ik maak quilts in allerlei maten en de grootste die ik tot nu toe heb gemaakt is er eentje op verzoek. Twee lieve mensen waarvan de partners overleden waren, besloten 6 jaar geleden om samen te gaan wonen. Twee seniorenbedden kwamen in een nieuw huisje te staan en om de nieuwe eenheid te benadrukken heb ik met veel liefde een quilt voor over deze bedden gemaakt. Het paar is nu ver in de 80 en nog steeds gelukkig samen.

I make quilts in different sizes and the largest I made so far is one on request. Two dear people whose partners had died, decided 6 years ago to live together. Two beds for elderly people were put in a new house, and to symbolize the new unity I made this quilt to cover both beds with much love. The couple is far in their eighties now and still happily together.

3x bedankt! / 3x Thanks!

Graag wil ik iedereen die op mijn quilt gestemd heeft, hartelijk bedanken. Ik ben op de 11e plaats geëindigd (van de 33 inzendingen), waar ik erg blij mee ben. Bij gelegenheid wil ik nog wel weer een keer mee doen. Behalve de stemmen op mijn “Zee-alfabet voor Celine” kreeg ik ook feedback en ook daarvoor wil ik graag hartelijk danken. Daarnaast wil ik iedereen hartelijk bedanken (en dat is dan het derde bedankje) die, al dan niet als volger, mijn blog komt bezoeken. Ik ben er nu ruim 4 maanden mee bezig en er is een wereld voor me opengegaan. In die tijd heb ik meer dan 5500 pageviews gehad en overal vandaan; het is fantastisch. Hierdoor ben ik ook vaker bij andere blogs gaan lezen en ook dat is erg boeiend. Ik hoop nog een poosje zo door te gaan, maar zonder de lezers van mijn blog zou dat lang zo leuk niet zijn! Dus nogmaals: BEDANKT! (op de foto: mij als 3-jarige).

I would like to say a warm thank you to everybody who voted for my quilt. Of the 33 participating quilts, I ended as number 11, which makes me very happy. Maybe one day I’ll join such a contest again. Apart from votes on “Sea-alphabet for Celine” I also got a lot of feedback for which I would like to say “thank you” too. I also would like to say thank you to all visiters of my blog. I started only 4 months ago and a totally unknown world has come alive. During these months I had more than 5500 pageviews, from all over the world. It’s awsome! I started reading more other blogs as well, which are mostly very interesting. I intend to continue like this but without people who read my blog it wouldn’t be so much fun. Therefore: THANK YOU! (On the picture: me being 3 years old!).

122. Wedstrijdquilt / Quilt for Contest

Ik kon het niet laten, ik heb weer een quilt aangemeld voor de Quilting Gallery. Dit keer was het thema borduurquilts en daar had ik precies een geschikte voor. 121. Textielkaart / Fibermail

Deze textielkaart heb ik gemaakt voor de jarige leidster van onze bee. Ik had van een quiltje in crazy patchwork wat restjes over en die heb ik gebruikt, aangevuld met kraaltjes en pailletten, en gouden borduursels en siersteken. Ik snap eigenlijk niet waarom ik er niet meer gemaakt heb, want het was erg leuk en zo gedaan…

I made this fibermail for the birthday of our bee-leader. From a quilt in crazy patchwork I had some leftovers and these were used, together with bead, paillets and golden embroidery and stitches. I don’t understand why I didn’t make more, since it was great fun to do and ready in no time…

120. Dronkeman’s pad variatie / Drunkard’s Path Variation

Precies 10 jaar geleden legde ik de laatste hand aan deze quilt omdat ik ‘m moest inleveren voor de quilttentoonstelling van het Quiltersgilde die dat jaar in Nieuwegein gehouden werd. Ik ben er een jaar mee bezig geweest: alle ronde vormen met de hand genaaid, de rechte met de machine en al het quiltwerk is met de hand gedaan in een meanderpatroon. Hij is ruim 130 x 130 cm en het was erg leuk er mee bezig te zijn.

Exactly 10 years ago I finished this quilt because I had to hand it in for the annual quilt exhibition of the Dutch Quilt Guild which was held in the town of Nieuwegein. It took me a year working on it: all round curves are patched by hand, the straight ones by machine, and all the quilting is done by hand using a meandering pattern. The size is little over 52” x 52” (130 x 130 cm). It was great fun to make it.
